Wolves’ hopes of European qualification dealt blow with key man Ruben Neves ruled out until May March 23, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Wolves have been dealt a big blow with confirmation that Ruben Neves will be out of action until May.

The midfielder picked up a knee injury during last week’s clash with Leeds United, a match that they lost 3-2.

As a result, the 25-year-old has been ruled out of Portugal’s upcoming World Cup play-off clash with Turkey, as well as a number of matches for Wolves.

A statement on the club’s website explained: “Ruben Neves suffered a medial collateral ligament injury to his knee in the match against Leeds United on Friday evening.

“He travelled to Portugal with members of the Wolves medical team to see a knee specialist, where the injury was confirmed as uncomplicated.

“He will spend this week in Portugal with the Wolves physio before returning to continue his rehabilitation at Compton Park. We are hoping for Ruben to be fit to return in May.”

Bruno Lage’s side are enjoying an excellent season so far and find themselves in eighth position in the Premier League table.

With just four points separating them from sixth place Manchester United, the absence of Neves could be a significant blow.

With Lage’s side due to face Aston Villa, Newcastle, Burnley and Brighton before the start of May, fans will be hoping that their side have enough quality to pick up a decent points return to keep their European aspirations alive.

Of course the injury to Neves comes at a time when the player is said to be attracting significant interest from the likes of Barcelona, Manchester United and Arsenal.

When quizzed by the Record last month on his future, Neves said: “It’s normal in football.

“Whenever there’s a transfer market there’s a lot of talk, but my goal and focus are on Wolverhampton and I’m not going to change that, things have been going really well for me.

“In football, the future is very uncertain and we don’t know what will happen. Obviously, I’m curious to see other championships, but I definitely like being here.”
