Simon Jordan has defended prospective Derby County owner Chris Kirchner following criticism for historic social media posts, describing the situation as ‘absurd’.

The American entrepreneur has been confirmed as preferred bidder for the Rams as the troubled Championship club move a step closer to ending a hugely turbulent period.

After entering administration in September, Quantuma have granted Kirchner a period of exclusivity as he looks to garner more information ahead of a potential takeover of the Rams.

While fans will no doubt be delighted at the prospect of a deal that could see the club leave administration before long, others have been left concerned following homophobic and sexist tweets.

One from 2013 said: “Men categorize women in one of four ways — mothers, virgins, s**** or b******. #factsonly.”

Kirchner has since deleted all of his historic tweets, before a spokesperson for Kirchner told BBC Radio Derby : “The tweets took place nearly 10 years ago. He was quoting song lyrics and movie quotes. It is not his personal opinion.

“He recognises that the tweets are not suitable content. Which is why they have been deleted.”

While some fans are concerned about Kirchner’s suitability to take charge of Derby, Jordan believes that people have no right to be offended given that there’s no evidence to suggest that the American businessman personally holds these views.

Speaking on White and Jordan, he said: “Who is he facing criticism from? I would be gobsmacked if it was Derby fans because they’re desperate to sell their football club and they’re going to be put into extinction if they don’t deal with it sooner rather than later.

“A. It depends what he said. B. It depends on the context in which he said it. C. It’s 10 years ago. D. People change their views and their minds and we live in a redemptive society.

“Contextually he talks about quoting the lines of a particular song, and perhaps he wouldn’t say it now.

“What we’re saying is that the observations made 10 years ago should be brought into the current, you don’t hold those views anymore but you should be judged by them.

“What a ridiculous, puerile, offended on offence’s sake world we live in. No, it absolutely shouldn’t be contextual right now. If he doesn’t hold anything vaguely resembling those views, and apparently he says he doesn’t, you’ve got to take it at face value.

“If every single one of us looks back into our past, all of us by 10 years’ ago’s standards would be in a difficult spot.”

Asked if he’s posted anything homophobic or misogynistic, Jordan said: “No, I don’t think so because I don’t hold those particular views, I don’t know that particular song and I don’t know the context of it.

“We live in a redemptive society. If he’s someone who continues with that mentality then it makes it more challenging, but it doesn’t and he hasn’t.

“It’s not a case of letting him off, you can’t be held to standard of 10 years ago that are not relevant for today. If not, why not take it back 20 years or 30 years?”

“If we are to hold everyone to standards of thinking from when they were 24 or 14 years of age, then we are bang in trouble as a society, all of us.

“There is no example that people continue this line of thinking and if the context was an immature mind without the understanding of quoting a song’s lyrics without the understanding of what they really represented, and by that nature he could forecast 10 years into the future for how people are going to judge him in the hear and now.

“What an absurd world we’re living in. We’re being offended for offended’s sake.”
