West Ham fans ‘can taste Europa League glory’ as David Moyes goes ‘above and beyond’ with ‘enormous’ victory over Lyon April 14, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer
David Moyes has gone ‘above and beyond’ by securing an ‘enormous’ Europa League semi-final berth with West Ham – and now has to win the competition.
That’s the belief of talkSPORT host Jason Cundy, who thinks Hammers fans can already taste European glory after downing French giants Lyon 3-0.
Goals from Craig Dawson, Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen sent Lyon crashing out of the competition after a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the London Stadium.
Lyon couldn’t lay a glove on West Ham this time round though, with Moyes’ men setting up a semi-final tie with Eintracht Frankfurt, who were their opponents the last time they reached this stage in Europe, 46 years ago.
On that occasion West Ham emerged victorious in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, downing Frankfurt before beating Anderlecht in the final.
The omens are positive for the Irons, and Cundy thinks the only thing on their minds should be lifting the Europa League trophy in Sevilla on May 18.
“They’ve got to win it,” an impressed Cundy said. “You can’t get to the semi-finals, you can’t get this far, with four teams left and for me there’s no reason why West Ham can’t win this.
“You can’t get this far and not win it, you can taste it now, you can taste what lifting that European trophy is going to feel like.”
Moyes has taken his club to new heights in the modern era, and Cundy is blown away by the work the Scot has done.
The 58-year-old’s career looked to be on a downward trajectory after Manchester United in 2014, but has certainly found a home with West Ham in his second stint with the club.
Cundy explained: “Over the last two years, what they have done, the way David Moyes has set them up, he’s a brilliant manager, he’s a superb coach.
“Their recruitment has been outstanding, they’ve not spent a huge amount of money, they’ve had to live on what is quite a thin squad.
“David Moyes has gone above and beyond anything that was anticipated that he could achieve with this squad.
“Do not underestimate how big this is, this is enormous.
“He’s had a tough time leaving Manchester United, he was almost embarrassed by what he did there, then he went to Spain and it didn’t work out, went to Sunderland, didn’t work out there.
“But he believed in what he was doing, credit to West Ham for bringing him back, they made the wrong choice in [Manuel] Pellegrini, they should have kept at that time, they made sure they rectified that error.”
