West Ham confirm Lucas Paqueta, once booked for showboating, as £51million club-record transfer August 30, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

West Ham United have confirmed Lucas Paqueta as their new club-record signing.

The attacking midfielder joins in a £51million transfer from Lyon, penning a four-year deal at the London Stadium.

Paqueta is now a West Ham United player after two seasons in France

“I am extremely happy to be here. I hope it’s the beginning of an enjoyable journey. I hope my time here is successful,” said the South American, who will wear No.11.

“Last season, West Ham had a very good season and I hope they continue to enjoy more and more good seasons in my time at the club.

“I am excited to pull on the West Ham shirt and show the fans what I can do, to help my team-mates and the club.”

Manager David Moyes said: “I’m delighted to welcome Lucas to West Ham.

“He’s a player I’ve admired from afar for a very long time and of course, we saw him close up in our Europa League campaign last season.

“He’s a very talented footballer and whilst he will need time to adapt to the Premier League, we’re excited about adding another proven international to our squad.”

The 33-cap Brazil international was praised by Moyes ahead of the transfer.

“He’s 23, has 30 Brazil caps and can play as a ten, eight or as a false nine. I think his pedigree is really good,” he said.

So, it’s no surprise he ensured the club have paid up to land the ex-AC Milan man.

The Hammers have looked in need of additions, only registering their first win of the season on Sunday against Aston Villa.

Even that was a 1-0 victory via a deflected Pablo Fornals goal as they registered just two shots on target.

In Ligue 1 last-term, Paqueta scored nine goals and created six on the way to being named the best foreign player in the division ahead of Marquinhos, Seko Fofana, and Jonathan David.

Paqueta’s skills are likely to go down well in east London but he was once booked for attempting a rainbow flick against Troyes in September 2021.

And Paqueta was defended for trying the move by international teammate Neymar.

He said: “This is a very sad scene,” he said. “Showing a yellow card for a dribble… a technical move is a solution. It doesn’t matter where on the pitch it is performed or in what minute of the game. This happened to me last season. And this season it’s Paqueta.

“Honestly, I don’t understand the reasoning. The famousJogo Bonito (beautiful game) is finished. Enjoy it while you can.”
