‘We’re in a hole’ – Chelsea tipped for pivotal few days in transfer market as Thomas Tuchel makes demands with defeat at Southampton labelled ‘a cause for concern’ August 31, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Chelsea have been tipped for a make-or-break few days in the transfer market following a disappointing evening at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Blues fell to a 2-1 defeat against Southampton on Tuesday night, a result which has seen them lose their second match in five Premier League fixtures, conceding eight goals in the process.

Raheem Sterling’s opener midway through the first half appeared to put Chelsea in control, however, Romeo Lavia’s stunner and Adam Armstrong’s strike before half-time left Thomas Tuchel’s side completely lost, something that he struggled to understand after the match.

Asked what happened by talkSPORT, Tuchel said: “I don’t know, I actually don’t know.

“Today there was not enough quality. It has to come. It will help when the transfer window closes because the noise will go down and we will push this team, of course, but we need to toughen up because we’re not tough enough at the moment to play these matches against Leeds and Southampton.”

Asked if they need to sign a No.9, Tuchel said: “We’ve been talking about this since I’ve been here, it’s not a problem.

“It’s not about bringing in the next one and the next one, what is concerning is the numbers and depth in the squad when you look at the players on the bench today and should they play for Chelsea with the demands of Chelsea.

“Yesterday we had 16 players in training. The quality will come back, the mentality will come back and we need a big squad to push everybody to the limit because this is what big squads do.

“When we have 16 guys in training it’s not the same situation.”

Reacting to Chelsea’s defeat on the south coast and their poor start to the season, Scott Minto believes that the club will be looking to make significant changes in the final days of the transfer window.

Speaking to Adrian Durham on Kick Off, Minto said: “The goal that made it 2-1 gave Southampton a big cheer and a big pat on the back. Coming off at half-time everyone in the stadium was up for it.

“Okay, it’s half-time. How are Chelsea going to react? They did not react at all in the second half.

“I think that Thomas Tuchel did all that he can with what he had on the bench. He went from a three, to a four, to a three again and bringing on all his attacking players that he thought he could in terms of senior professionals, but they just weren’t good enough.

“For me, Hakim Ziyech, it wouldn’t bother me if he didn’t play for Chelsea again. It was difficult for Christian Pulisic coming on but again, he’s another player who has flattered to deceive over the last 18 months or so.

“Chelsea need another central defender and they need an out-and-out striker and listening to you guys talk about Anthony Gordon, maybe they need him playing with passion as well as skill and technique as well.

“At the moment they have a lot of ‘flair players’, but they’re not getting on the ball and in the second half it was Southampton who stepped it up and fully deserved the three points in the end.

“It was disappointing for Chelsea and it’s going to be an interesting last couple of days before the transfer window finishes.”

Chelsea are expecting to complete a deal to sign Wesley Fofana this week, while the likes of Anthony Gordon and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are also being heavily linked as options to bulk up Tuchel’s squad, something that Jason Cundy believes could see them come good in the coming weeks.

Cundy said on The Sports Bar: “Right now the transfer window is still open and there’s a lot of knee-jerk reaction about who is going to do what this season and right now, I feel a bit beat.

“When the window shuts and we’re ten games in and the European competitions start, it’ll start to level out.

“Right now, we’re not good enough. There’s no getting away from it but you look at some of the players who started tonight.

“If everyone is fit and everyone is playing then some of the players who started tonight would be starting.

“We’re in a hole and I look at the performance and see that there’s cause for concern.”
