‘We won’t stop’ – England defender Conor Coady responds to young Hungary fans booing Three Lions stars taking knee, as boss Gareth Southgate reacts to jeers June 5, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Conor Coady has told talkSPORT that supporters booing the England players taking the knee will not stop them from continuing to do it in future internationals.

The Three Lions’ defeat to Hungary was due to be played behind closed doors after they were issued a three-match spectator ban.

The suspension was handed to them by UEFA as a punishment for the racist behaviour of their supporters – something which they were heard doing as the England players took the knee on Saturday.

And it’s something that Coady reveals the players “heard”, but he added that it won’t put them off making the statement against racism.

“We heard it,” Coady told talkSPORT.

“We’ve spoken about it now enough as a team, we’ve spoken about it enough as individuals, whether it be at our club, whether it be playing for our country, we’ve spoken up about.

“We understand and I hope people understand why we’re doing this sort of thing now. This won’t stop us from doing it in the future. It’s not something that will stop us.

“We hope people understand what we’re trying to do and the message we’re trying to create, and that won’t stop.

“The majority of people take it really well and the majority of people really back us and support us in terms of what we’re trying to do, and we won’t stop doing that now.

“People take it in a different way, but it’s important we don’t stop and stop our beliefs moving forward.”

England boss Gareth Southgate also spoke about the poor response to the anti-racism message, but insists it is a problem in England too.

“The reality is that I hear people booing it in the stadiums in England,” Southgate told talkSPORT.

“And that’s why we do it – we do it because we’ve got to raise awareness, we do it to make that statement.

“I won’t tire of saying it’s not a political statement, it is an anti-discrimination statement.

“Why do young people follow? It’s hard to explain but other people are going to have to deal with that.

“But, tonight, I think it would be wrong for me to talk too much about things other than the result because we’ve lost, and I think it’s important in those moments that you reflect and take the criticism that comes with the defeat.”
