‘Unstoppable’ and ‘frightening’ Man City are running away with Premier League title and backed to finally win Champions League under Pep Guardiola this season February 22, 2021 – Posted in: Soccer
Manchester City look nailed-on to win the Premier League – and this could well be the season they conquer Europe too reckons club legend Paul Dickov.
Pep Guardiola’s men are ten points clear at the top of the Premier League table and on an 18-match winning run – beating Arsenal 1-0 in their most recent match on Sunday.
Former City striker Dickov has hailed the current ‘unstoppable’ and ‘frightening’ squad, which has coped well without star men Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne for large parts of the season.
Dickov told The Warm Up on talkSPORT: “You go and score four away at Liverpool, three away at Everton and three at home to Tottenham; they just look unstoppable at the minute.
“It doesn’t matter who comes in, the squad is just looking that strong. The other night [Ilkay] Gundogan was out, Phil Foden steps up, Bernardo Silva steps up.
“If somebody else isn’t in there doing it, they’ve got so much quality within the squad that it’s just frightening.
“I genuinely believe it’s the best squad in Europe. One to 11 you’ve got some fantastic teams in there and City are right up there with them all.
“They’ve coped without De Bruyne and Aguero and Gundogan recently.
“You look at their bench sometimes and their bench would walk into any other team.”
A Champions League trophy has eluded City under Guardiola, however Dickov believes they are well placed to win that competition too this season.
He added: “People ask me all the time, ‘can they win the Champions League this year?’
“I genuinely think they can if they keep everybody fit because if someone is not quite doing it or Pep wants to rest someone, there are world class players good enough to come in and do the job.
“They’ve got that right the way through the team.”
City’s record-breaking run has been built on a solid defence – the 1-0 win at Arsenal means they have now claimed 23 clean sheets this season.
With his side sitting ten points clear at the top of the Premier League, boss Guardiola admits he has been surprised by the incredible run of form.
“I’m surprised and impressed and so when everyone is suffering in this world, all the teams in the league are dropping points, we were consistent over the past two months and I did not expect [that],” he said.
”People talk and talk about the record and the victories but to do this you have to win these types of games many, many times.
“It is not always about winning by three or four because that is not possible.”
