‘They’ll expect a top four finish’ August 13, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Lianne Sanderson believes that Arsenal’s fans will expect a top four finish after a successful summer in the transfer market.

The Gunners endured a heartbreaking end to last term after being pipped to a Champions League spot by arch rivals Tottenham in the final fixtures of the campaign.

With Mikel Arteta’s side having to settle for a spot in the Europa League this term, the club have doubled down in the transfer market to add crucial quality to the group.

Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko both arrived on big-money deals from Manchester City, while Fabio Vieira also arrived from Porto.

With a victory under their belts in the first match of the season against Crystal Palace, supporters are hoping for a good season and according to Sanderson, expectations are high at the Emirates Stadium.

Sanderson told Gameday Countdown: “They have progressed, you can’t deny that.

“Yes, they missed out on the Champions League but they do look better and the signings that they’ve made have been brilliant.”

Responding to Hugh Woozencroft’s claim that a fifth place finish would be good for Arsenal, Sanderson said: “I don’t.

“Arsenal threw it away last year, getting in the Champions League and finishing in the top four and Tottenham managed to get it at the last minute.

“I think that a lot of teams were inconsistent but I don’t think it’s a success if Arsenal come fifth, I think that they need to progress and finish in the top four.

“Arsenal fans will feel that way too. Everybody thought that they were nailed on to finish in the top four.

“They might not be nailed on this season, but they’ve strengthened with players like Gabriel Jesus and [Oleksandr] Zinchenko.

“I still fancy Arsenal over Tottenham. I know a lot of people are getting carried away thinking that Tottenham are going to win the league, but I think that Arsenal fans will expect to finish in the top four at least.”
