‘Superb’ starlet backed for role in Liverpool’s strongest midfield and tipped to ‘easily’ start for England December 19, 2020 – Posted in: Soccer
Liverpool starlet Curtis Jones should ‘easily’ be starting for England if he remains a key player for Liverpool.
Jones, the 19-year-old midfielder, has been one of the breakout stars of this Premier League season, establishing himself in Jurgen Klopp’s set-up amid the Reds’ injury crisis.
He played 12 times last term as Liverpool eased their way to their first top-flight league championship in 30 years, and he’s already made more appearances this campaign – totting-up 15 showings in all competitions.
Jones has also added three goals this season and earned comparisons to Anfield legend Steven Gerrard for his all-action displays in midfield and eye for goal.
The expectation is that Jones will drop back out of Klopp’s starting XI once Liverpool are back to full strength, and he was even relegated to the bench for Saturday’s visit to Crystal Palace – which is LIVE on talkSPORT.
Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum and Naby Keita started in Klopp’s midfield three, and Fabinho is also still to return to playing in his natural position having deputised as a centre-half for most the campaign.
But while Jones’ playing situation is expected to worsen once Klopp can again call on his most high-profile players, talkSPORT’s Darren Bent believes the teenager is actually not far from being one of Liverpool’s strongest midfielders.
And perhaps even one of England’s starting midfielders, too!
“Playing in front of no fans has probably helped ease him in,” said the former Three Lions striker on talkSPORT’s Drivetime. “But he’s played at Anfield before when it’s been packed – so I think he can handle the pressure.
“He has been absolutely superb. I’m sure Jurgen Klopp is looking at his performances, already thinking ‘if everybody is fit, I don’t think he’s too far away from being in that starting midfield’.
“You’d have Fabinho in there holding, Thiago potentially, and then it comes down to Jordan Henderson or Wijnaldum.
“Listen, if everyone is fit and he is still playing every single week for Liverpool, who are the best team in this country, then he should be starting for England – easily.”
