Romelu Lukaku has ‘lost total belief in his game’ after missing a golden opportunity in Chelsea defeat, as Thomas Tuchel worries Blues will get ‘hammered’ in second leg against Real Madrid April 6, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Romelu Lukaku looks like a player who has ‘lost total belief in his game’ after missing a golden opportunity to pull a goal back for Chelsea in their 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid.

The Belgian, who the Blues spent a club-record fee on in the summer, missed a great chance to pull one back for the west Londoners in the 69th minute.

Lukaku had to score to make it 3-2

And he couldn’t believe he put it wide

Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross was deflected to Lukaku who was stood, unmarked, just outside the six-yard box but headed wide from close range.

It would have been a goal that would have reduced the two-goal deficit and put Chelsea in a far better position heading to the Bernabeu on April 12.

And, after the miss, former Blues striker Tony Cascarino believes that the centre-forward is lacking a lot of confidence.

Cascarino told talkSPORT: “I really don’t know what Romelu Lukaku is at the moment.

“I’m looking at a player that’s lost total belief in his game.”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel wasn’t happy with the all-round performance of his team, claiming they will get ‘hammered’ if they play like that in the second leg.

Benzema was simply unstoppable in west London

“We have to go to Southampton and I think it’s very, very important to process this first. Absolutely crucial,” Tuchel told BT Sport after the defeat.

“I will make sure that everybody processes this because this is absolutely the most important thing now, because if we keep on playing like that we will lose to Southampton.

“And then we don’t need to think about the Bernabeu, we will get hammered in the Bernabeu.”

Ex-Chelsea man Jason Cundy was disappointed in his former sides’ defensive display against Real, labelling it a ‘disasterclass’.

Karim Benzema netted a tremendous hat-trick at Stamford Bridge – and Cundy says he was relieved the Spanish side didn’t score more.

“It was disaster, a disasterclass,” Cundy told talkSPORT. “I can put it no other way.

“At half time, I was relieved it was 2-1. I felt happy at 2-1.

“I can only imagine Carlo Ancelotti going in at half time would have felt a little bit peeved that Chelsea were back in it because, really, it should have been 3-1.”

He added: “Going forward, I actually thought we looked half decent. But defensively… I thought we were bad at the weekend, and I know Real are a better side than Brentford, but my God.”
