Robert Lewandowski was ‘ready’ to join Manchester United in 2012 before they signed Robin van Persie, but Red Devils now poised to enter race for Bayern Munich star if Barcelona transfer fails June 12, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Robert Lewandowski has been one of the deadliest strikers in world football over the last decade, but looks likely to have a new home next season.

The Poland striker has amassed a phenomenal record of 344 goals in 375 games for Bayern Munich since joining on a free transfer in 2014.

The 33-year-old has won every elite competition there is to win at club level with the German club, but has openly spoken about wanting to leave.

He has one year left on his contract, but an apparent breakdown in his relationship makes an extension unlikely.

He is pushing to leave this summer with Barcelona his favoured destination, while Bayern want Sadio Mane as a replacement.

Barca would no doubt love to sign the much vaunted marksman, but their financial difficulties may make that difficult.

They are trying to shift some of their high earners, like Frenkie de Jong who has been linked to Manchester United.

If they cannot landed Lewandowski, then United themselves are reportedly waiting in the wings to make a move.

The Sun report that his £400,000-a-week wages would not put them off making an approach.

The signing would be a huge coup for new boss Erik ten Hag, who was working at Bayern Munich when the club signed him in 2014.

It is not the first time the Red Devils have tried to sign Lewandowski, though, as Sir Alex Ferguson came close to landing him in 2012, when he was 24.

United ended up signing Robin van Persie instead, who fired them to the league title in Fergie’s final season.

“After my second year in Dortmund, I had a conversation with Sir Alex Ferguson,” Lewandowski told France Football in 2020. “He wanted me to come to Manchester.

“I was very interested. I can even say I was ready. But Dortmund didn’t want to let me go. It didn’t upset me more than that because things were going well with Borussia.”
