Rangers right-back James Tavernier has scored more goals than Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane December 15, 2020 – Posted in: Soccer
Rangers captain James Tavernier is a man in form and has managed to outscore most of Europe’s big-name stars this season – and he’s a right-back!
The 29-year-old Englishman has more goals and assists than any player in the Scottish Premiership, steering Rangers to the top of the league’s summit with a huge 13-point advantage over second-place Celtic.
It looks increasingly likely that Rangers will end Celtic’s run of nine league titles and stop the dreaded ten-in-a-row, but it could also be a special personal season for Tavernier.
At this rate, he might even be thinking about the European Golden Shoe!
Tavernier’s latest goal, his 17th of the season in all competitions, was a stunning free-kick from 35 yards during the 2-1 win at Dundee.
He also laid on the second for Connor Goldson, notching his eighth assist of the season, to show he’s more than just a free-kick and penalty merchant.
Given their long route to the Europa League, via the qualifying round, and the early start to the Scottish Premiership, Rangers have played more games than most this season – 27 already in fact.
Nonetheless, Tarvernier has more goals in all competitions than Cristiano Ronaldo (12), Lionel Messi (8), Harry Kane (15), Robert Lewandowski (16), and Kylian Mbappe (12).
With the delayed Euro 2020 coming up next summer, it looks like England boss Gareth Southgate might have another extraordinary right-back to consider taking.
