Raheem Sterling ‘in his prime’ and would be ‘great signing’ for Real Madrid amid Man City transfer talk, says Arsenal legend Ray Parlour June 3, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer
Raheem Sterling would be a ‘great signing’ for Real Madrid, amid links with a move away from Man City.
The England forward has one year left on his contract at the Etihad Stadium and, after recent windows saw him linked with a move to Barcelona, it’s now their Spanish rivals who are now leading the race.
Sterling added another Premier League crown to his personal trophy haul this season, but was not a regular in Pep Guardiola’s side.
As he enters the final year of his contract, it’s claimed Sterling could leave Man City this summer if the right buyer came along, with rumours suggesting the player seeking to join another ‘elite club’ should he depart.
“I can see some players thinking about trying a different league, a different culture – I wouldn’t put it past Raheem thinking about that,” Parlour said on talkSPORT Breakfast.
“He’s got one year left on his contract and, it’s amazing, I thought Raheem must be 30-odd now – but he’s only 27!
“He’s in the prime of his life and career and he doesn’t play on a regular basis because Man City have got so many good players.
“So, yeah, what a move. Real Madrid have surprised everyone this year. I expected them to win LaLiga, but not the Champions League. To beat Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea, and you’d argue two of those teams are the best in the world at the moment, it’s an amazing season.
“Antonio Rudiger is going there as well, Real Madrid are really stepping it up now and Raheem Sterling would be a great signing for them.
“We forget he’s still only 27. He’s had a long career already, but I’m sure Pep Guardiola knows how important he is.
“He’s a big-game player and we saw that at the Euros for England. Everybody thought Sterling was not in great form, but he stepped up and was probably one of our best players in the tournament.
“So if he does move on, I’m sure he’d do a great job for Real Madrid if he went there.”
Sterling has openly discussed leaving the Etihad in the past, admitting back in October 2021 that he would be ‘open’ to moving clubs at the promise of more regular minutes.
“If there was the option to go somewhere else for more game time I would be open to it,” he said at the time. “Football is the most important thing to me.
“Challenges that I have set myself from a young age and dreams as well. As an English player all I know is the Premier League and I’ve always thought, you know, maybe one day I’d love to play abroad. See how I would come up against that challenge.
“I’m not a person that’s going to complain. I’ve not tried to make it a bigger deal than it actually is. I get on with my work. Do what I need to do. And I’m just raring to go. Playing football matches regularly. Scoring goals regularly.
“From a young child, football has been the most important thing in my life. My most happiest I should say. When I play football that is where I get my happiness from. And, of course, with family as well but football for me has a special place in my heart.
“With everything that comes with football, money, being able to do nice things … at the end of the day, if football for me is not at a certain standard I’m not really at my happiest. If I want my happiness at a certain level I need to be playing football. I need to be scoring goals and enjoying myself.”
