And there was a personal moment to savour for Messi after his side eventually got the job done.

The Argentina superstar has an opportunity to gain an edge on personal rival Cristiano Ronaldo in the history books in Europe this season.

Ronaldo is stuck in the Europa League this season after Manchester United failed to qualify for the top-tier competition.

It is the first time since 2003 that Ronaldo has not featured at the start of a Champions League campaign.

The 37-year-old tried and failed to leave the Red Devils over the summer in order to reinforce his many records in the competition.

But Messi has also just achieved a feat which signal his incredible longevity at the top of the game.

The 35-year-old became the first player in history to score in 18 consecutive years in the Champions League.

He was previously level with Raul, who netted every season from 1995 to 2011.

However, Messi is now out in front on his own, having scored his first goal as a teenager at Barcelona in 2005.

The Argentine forward was forced to rescue a result for PSG against Israeli minnows Maccabi Haifa.
