Piers Morgan delivers brutal verdict on Manchester United’s pre-season win over Liverpool and sheds more light on ‘dialogue’ with Cristiano Ronaldo July 12, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

“If this means anything to United fans then they really have reached rock bottom.”

That was Piers Morgan’s brutal verdict following Manchester United’s surprise 4-0 win over Liverpool in a pre-season friendly.

Erik ten Hag’s reign as Red Devils boss couldn’t have got off to a better start as his side outplayed last season’s FA Cup and Carabao Cup winners.

The result will be a pleasant surprise for Man United fans but the TalkTV host believes they shouldn’t be getting too excited just yet.

Morgan said on Drive: “I think if it means anything to United fans then they really have reached rock bottom.

“None of these games mean anything other than keeping players in the right level of fitness heading into August.

“Liverpool are lightyears ahead of United and it must eat away at their soul in the same way watching Tottenham move ahead of Arsenal eats away at my soul.

“We have to be realistic as football fans. I think United are in a pretty bad place, I’m not massively excited by any of their transfer business.

“And they seem prepared to lose in my mind the greatest player to ever play the game after he just scored 24 goals for them seems an extraordinary situation.

“You can’t blame Ronaldo for wanting to leave, why would he want to stay?”

Morgan recently revealed Ronaldo is ‘sick and tired’ of the situation at Old Trafford amid reports the Portuguese wants to leave the club.

And Morgan didn’t suggest Ronaldo could be about to change his mind as he shed further light on the conversations he has with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Morgan added: “We have an ongoing dialogue. As we know, he’s a champion. He’s won everywhere he’s been and I think he was incredibly disappointed with the way United’s season went.

“I would categorise his state of mind as he wants to play at the highest possibly level and right now United are not at that level. They’re not in the Champions League… is he going to get back into the Champions League with the current squad? I don’t think he is.”
