Pep Guardiola warns of over-reliance on Erling Haaland as Man City look to win first ever Champions League title September 5, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer
Pep Guardiola insists Manchester City can’t solely rely on Erling Haaland as they look to become European champions for the first time.
City’s new striker has been on fire in the league having scored ten goals in just six Premier League matches, since joining from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
Guardiola believes it is up to all his players to perform if his side are to be successful this season, and they can’t just look to Haaland.
“All the players they try to make us better, otherwise it makes no sense,” he told reporters on Monday.
“That [a group collective] helps us to win titles, I don’t know. If we rely all on Erling’s shoulders we don’t win the Champions League. We try to create chances for him to score goals.
“We convinced him to come here, we felt we didn’t have much strikers. Try to be involved in the way we play. He settles good like Julian [Alvarez] and other players.
“I understand everyone talks about Erling but I have three, four, five new players and it’s important they all settle. We don’t win just for Erling and don’t lose just for Erling.
“He has a special quality and might be able to solve some problems. If we don’t play good we aren’t going to win games.”
The Sky Blues travel to Andalusia to take on Julien Lopetegui’s men at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan on Tuesday night, live on talkSPORT, in their group G opener.
Both John Stones and Kyle Walker will miss the trip through injury, Guardiola has confirmed.
Right-back Walker was forced off in the latter stages of Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Aston Villa in the Premier League, while Stones also picked up a knock.
“[They are] injured. John [Stones] is not much,” the City boss added.
“Kyle [Walker] is not much too, but I don’t know if he will be ready for Saturday, or [Borussia] Dortmund or Wolves before the international break.”
The pair’s absence could see deadline day signing Manuel Akanji come in for his City debut.
Midfielder Kalvin Phillips has travelled to Spain after a spell out with a shoulder injury and could also feature.
Guardiola is expecting a tough encounter despite Sevilla’s poor form.
Julen Lopetegui’s side, who finished fourth in LaLiga last season, have collected just one point from their opening four games.
“Always teams in Spain are so tough – they have dominated in the last 15 years,” the City boss added.
“We have to be prepared because they will be aggressive.”
