Pep Guardiola pays touching tribute to Michael Ballack’s son, Emilio, as Man City boss wants to dedicate Community Shield victory to him August 7, 2021 – Posted in: Soccer
Pep Guardiola paid a touching tribute to Michael Ballack’s son, Emilio, who tragically died this week.
The 18-year-old is understood to have died in a quad bike accident while on holiday in Portugal.
Chelsea issued a brief statement expressing their deepest sympathies for the Blues hero yesterday.
Ahead of the Community Shield against Leicester, Guardiola paid tribute to Emilio and wants to win the game in his honour.
“I’m going to play the Community Shield tomorrow to think about Michael Ballack’s son, Emilio Ballack,” he told a press conference.
“He was a friend of my family that we met when I was in Munich.
“He was an exceptional 18-year-old boy, well educated.
“Unfortunately he had a terrible accident in Portugal.
“On behalf of myself to Michael, his father and the kids, I want to play the final as best as possible and to dedicate it to him.
“This victory, this is for you Michael and your family. I’m so sorry.”
The Premier League champions get their season underway at Wembley against the FA Cup winners.
But Guardiola will not have a full compliment of players to choose from due to injury and involvement in this summer’s European Championship.
He said: “We start honestly tomorrow for the first title and half the team is out. Half the team is out.
“Complaints? Zero. It is a pleasure to play the Community Shield with Leicester.
“I’m lucky that it is my sixth season and most of them know exactly what you want to do.
“I cannot imagine arriving tomorrow and playing the Community Shield in your first year.
“It’s so difficult today the schedule is so tough for us.”
On the injury latest to his players, Guardiola said: “Phil Foden will be out for a while. He had a tough injury for the national team and unfortunately could not play the final.
“You have to be careful with this injury as people will anticipate it will be longer.
“With Kevin, he is still out as well. I think he can come back a bit quicker than Phil, apparently.
“Both a still out for a while.”
City signed Jack Grealish in a British transfer record £100million deal
“He is not ready to start at all. He was one week training, but he will travel with us to settle with the team and he will be one the bench.
“After, we will see what happens, but from the beginning no way.”
