‘No chance’ – Manchester United’s pursuit of Frenkie de Jong is over after Casemiro signing, Rio Ferdinand insists, but new forward could arrive at Old Trafford amid Antony links August 23, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Manchester United’s summer-long pursuit of Frenkie de Jong has come to an end, insists former defender Rio Ferdinand.

United boss Erik ten Hag had set his sights on acquiring the Barcelona midfield but despite an offer being made for the 25-year-old, his reluctance to leave the Nou Camp ensured the pursuit became a drawn-out saga.

Instead, the Red Devils raided La Liga rivals Real Madrid for Brazil international Casemiro in a deal worth up to £70million and he was unveiled to the Old Trafford faithful before Monday’s 2-1 win against Liverpool.

Ferdinand was asked whether United would still try to sign De Jong following the capture of Casemiro and gave a resounding response.

“No, not that they’ve signed Casemiro, no chance.” Ferdinand told FIVE Podcast.

The footballer-turned-pundit then revealed where he thought the remainder of United’s transfer plans may lie with attacking and defensive reinforcements likely to be prioritised.

“I think they’ll still go for Antony at Ajax if they can still get the deal done. It seems as though it’s moving in the right direction. And they might even go for a centre forward, another one especially if Ronaldo goes.

“Are they happy with Wan-Bissaka? I don’t know? Maybe they might even go and get a cover right-back?”

United have not officially ruled themselves out of contention for De Jong but it appears that the Dutchman is still reluctant to leave Catalonia, describing himself as ‘settled’ in the city.

But against Liverpool, the midfield duo consisting of Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominany displayed all of the attributes De Jong possesses with high work-rate, vision, passing and purpose.

Ferdinand was visibly overjoyed at the Red Devils’ victory over their bitter rivals which enabled Ten Hag’s side to leapfrog Liverpool in the table.

Both sides had made stuttering starts to the season but with three games played, it is Jurgen Klopp’s Reds who are still without a league win.
