Mohamed Salah refuses to comment on contract talks as ‘really sensitive situation’ could distract from Liverpool’s trophy hunt April 9, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Mohamed Salah ‘can’t say yes and can’t say no’ in regards to a contract extension with Liverpool, but won’t let the situation distract from his side’s trophy pursuit.

Salah’s Liverpool future has been one of the biggest off-field topics at Anfield during the season, with a new deal expected to be completed long ago.

The Egyptian’s current deal with the club expires in 2023, and Liverpool will be wary about letting him enter the final year of his contract, which could lead to a free transfer.

Both Salah and his manager Jurgen Klopp have commented on the matter, with the Liverpool boss attempting to quell supporters fears, while Salah has been far more cryptic.

The 29-year-old has expressed his desire to stay on Merseyside, but insists things are out of his control, with his agent then appearing to muddy the waters on social media.

Salah has again been asked to comment on the situation, but insisted it would be selfish to distract from his side’s end of season run-in.

Asked by Sky Sports for an update, a smiling Salah said: “Well not much, but honestly what can I say is there’s many things people don’t know about it but I can’t be selfish now talking about my situation.

“We are in the most important period for the team so I have to just talk about the team, focus on what’s coming with the team, and that’s the most important thing, that’s what I can say, hopefully we’re going to be more optimistic and then just see what’s going to happen.

“I can’t say yes, I can’t say no, but I said many times before about what I want, but then again I can’t really go deep in the contract now because it’s a really sensitive situation.

“The team need to win, I can’t be like, just going in the news and talking about my contract, no, I just focus on the team and that’s it.”

Salah has been a revelation since his £36.5million move from Roma in 2017, lifting the Premier League and Champions League while breaking a number of historical goal-scoring records.

However, having your future in doubt can be a distraction for anyone, but not for Salah.

“No, not at all, not at all, [is is a distraction] I know I talk to the manager from time to time,” he said.

“I’m very professional, I know my job very well, I’m almost here the first one and last one to leave but I know what I’m doing so I’m not bothered about that.

“I’m just focusing with the team, that’s the most important thing for me, focus to win trophies, and I’m giving everything for the club I can.”
