Matt Ritchie scores ‘one of the most comical own goals ever’ but Newcastle recuse point through Callum Wilson penalty against Fulham December 20, 2020 – Posted in: Soccer

Matt Ritchie scored one of the most bizarre own goals of the season on Saturday in Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Fulham.

The winger was unfortunate to put the ball in the back of his own net as the first half was coming to an end.

Ademola Lookman swung the ball into the middle, where defender Tosin Adarabioyo headed it down for Decordova-Reid to flick the ball towards goal.

The effort was actually going wide but bounced up awkwardly and hit Ritchie in the face and deflected in.

Former Leicester and England striker Gary Lineker enjoyed the own goal and posted about it on social media.

He wrote:”Matt Ritchie has just scored one of the most comical own goals I think I’ve ever witnessed. Even @alanshearer couldn’t fight a chuckle after four replays.”

The half ended with the visitors deservedly 1-0 up and Newcastle having misfired once again.

There was more VAR controversy in the second half as referee Graham Scott awarded the home side a penalty after Callum Wilson went down under last man Joachim Andersen’s challenge on the hour.

After consulting the pitchside screen, the defender was sent off as he was not making a play on the ball but first contact appeared outside the box and Wilson may have gone down a little easy.

Wilson stepped up to drill the spot-kick straight down the middle to level.
