Manchester United star Anthony Martial suffers more racist abuse on social media after draw to West Brom February 15, 2021 – Posted in: Soccer
Anthony Martial has suffered more racial abuse on social media following Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with West Brom.
The Red Devils forward was sent vile Instagram messages, which included N-word slurs and monkey emojis, on Sunday afternoon.
Martial was replaced by Mason Greenwood after 66 minutes as United dropped vital points in the title race at the Hawthorns.
West Brom took a shock lead through Mbaye Diagne, but Bruno Fernandes equalised just before half-time.
Martial, who has scored just four Premier League goals this season, has become the latest footballer to suffer racial abuse online.
Football’s leaders have sent an open letter to social media companies calling on them to do more to stamp out abuse following the spate of recent incidents.
Since then, Instagram has insisted it will impose harsher punishments in an attempt to prevent the abuse.
Last weekend, former Aston Villa and England forward Gabby Agbonlahor urged Premier League stars to boycott social media platforms.
After deleting his Twitter account due to racial abuse, Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: “Seeing it happen so much and how easy it is and the lack of punishment… I’m siting here thinking, players, sports stars, people in general should boycott the app.
“Maybe that’s what needs to happen.
“I just deleted the app off my phone, it’s gone, because there needs to be something bigger that’s done. We’re seeing there’s not enough punishment.
“It’s something that us as individuals can do to make a change.
“They’re not going to be bothered about me not being on there, but if the big Premier League and world stars come off Twitter, I’m telling you now they would change their settings.”
