Louie Barry swaps shirts with Liverpool star Fabinho after scoring on Aston Villa debut but runs to get it back January 9, 2021 – Posted in: Soccer
It was a night to remember for youngster Louie Barry who scored on his Aston Villa debut even if it ended in a 4-1 defeat to Liverpool.
The entire Villa first-team squad was ruled out of their FA Cup third round clash due to a coronavirus outbreak at the club.
They were forced to play their kids in order to fulfil the fixture and it unsurprisingly ended in defeat.
But the scoreline didn’t reflect the whole story of the game and a particularly spirited first-half display saw them go in at the break 1-1.
Barry took his one real chance when put through on goal and he brilliantly finished on his debut for the club, like it was for the entire team.
Tiredness set in after the break and three quick goals from Georgino Wijnaldium, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane put the match to bed.
It was Barry who will take many of the headlines for his magic moment for the club, who he has supported since he was a child.
He swapped shirts with Liverpool star Fabinho after the game but ended up chasing after him to get it back.
A quiet word from one of his coaches saw the 17-year-old run down the tunnel to speak to the Brazilian wanting his debut shirt back.
The Liverpool man handed over the jersey and let him keep his own as a memento from the match.
The 17-year-old told BT Sport: “I nearly (swapped it) but I remembered it was my debut shirt so I got it back. Credit to Fabinho as I got the shirt as well. Got both of them.”
When asked about his goal, Barry said: “I knew that I had it as soon as I saw it and it came out for me. I put the ball in the back of the net and it’s the proudest I’ve ever been of myself.
“My family were probably screaming at the TV when it hit the back of the net, and I’ve never been so proud. I happened so quickly and I was just happy to score – and hopefully many more.”
