Lionel Messi ‘honoured’ to be named in Ballon d’Or ‘Dream Team’ XI alongside legends including Cristiano Ronaldo and late Diego Maradona December 15, 2020 – Posted in: Soccer

Lionel Messi said he is ‘honoured’ to be named in the Ballon d’Or ‘Dream Team’ XI.

France Football sparked debate across social media by revealing their all-time best XI of players.

No player has won the Ballon d’Or more times than Messi who has ben crowned victor on six occasions

The French outlet sought to replicate the sort of excitement usually associated with the main Ballon d’Or, which was cancelled in 2020 due to the ‘lack of a sufficiently level playing field’ caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Iconic Soviet goalkeeper Lev Yashin – the only stopper to have won the Ballon d’Or – was chosen between the sticks in the XI, which utilised a 3-4-3 formation.

Three legendary defenders made up the back three, with former Germany captain Franz Beckenbauer anchoring Italy and Milan stalwart Paolo Maldini and Brazil giant Cafu.

Selecao hero Pele and the late Diego Maradona are used as wingers in the line-up, with Spain and Barcelona great Xavi partnering Lothar Matthaus in the middle of the park.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi – who have 11 Ballons d’Or between them – are joined by Ronaldo Nazario in a truly jaw-dropping front three.

Messi, a six-time winner of the prize, said it was an honour to be included among such a ‘phenomenal’ list of players.

“For me it is an honour to have been included in the eleven of the Ballon d’Or Dream Team,” wrote the 33-year-old on Instagram.

“I want to thank you for choosing me and also congratulate all the players who were selected in the two teams and all the nominees, there are real phenomena on that list!”
