Lionel Messi ‘close to joining’ Paris Saint-Germain after shock Barcelona exit and set to sign two-year contract August 6, 2021 – Posted in: Soccer
Lionel Messi’s exit from Barcelona was only confirmed yesterday, but he is moving swiftly on to his next club.
Reports on Friday evening claim he is ‘close’ to joining Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year contract.
PSG quickly emerged as the frontrunners to sign the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.
The free transfer could be confirmed as soon as THIS WEEKEND.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano tweeted: “Paris Saint-Germain are close to sign Leo Messi, confirmed. PSG are preparing the official contract until June 2023 to be submitted to Messi and his father Jorge in the next hours.
“Messi’s open to join PSG. Neymar was pushing in the last 24h. PSG are so, so confident.”
According to The Telegraph, a meeting will take place between Jorge Messi and PSG on Saturday as they look to finalise an agreement.
Messi left Barcelona as a free agent after 21 years following a failure to sign new terms, with his previous contract expiring in June.
The Spanish giants were unable to meet La Liga’s spending limits, despite insisting both player and club moved heaven and earth to strike a deal.
Laporta told the media on Friday: “We had been negotiating for two months. The first agreement was to sign for two years and pay him over a five-year period. Then we moved on to a five-year contract, which Leo also accepted.
“The negotiation with Messi is over. The agreements could not be formalised. There is no salary margin and LaLiga is not flexible in terms of extending that limit. We have to move on.”
