Lionel Messi has revealed he has always ‘dreamt’ of playing in the United States as speculation continues to mount over the Barcelona’s superstar future.

The 33-year-old, who has scored a remarkable 644 goals in 749 matches for the Catalans, sensationally expressed his desire to leave Camp Nou during the summer – a move which was rejected by the board.

Messi’s contract at Barcelona expires next summer

Barca chiefs insisted any suitor would have to pay his £630m release clause, a move which has seen Messi reluctantly decide to see his out the final year of his contract.

Man City, among a host of other clubs, are believed to be interested in signing the Argentine forward next summer.

However, Messi has made his strongest indication yet that the MLS is where his future lies.

He told La Sexta: “I’ve always had the dream of playing in another league, in United States. Maybe it will happen, doesn’t have to be right away. Today I am just focused on these next six months.

Messi has become synonymous with Barca for more than a decade, helping them win four European Cups, ten LaLiga titles and numerous other trophies.

Arguably the most successful days of his career came under Pep Guardiola, who managed Barcelona from 2008-2012.

And Messi has revealed he has kept in contact with Guardiola amid speculation they could reunite at the Etihad next summer.

Messi added: “I don’t know when I last got a message from Pep [Guardiola] but we have spoken yes. About how things are, how he’s doing at Manchester City, how things are going here. For me, he’s the best coach…”

Messi had a public falling out with Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu over his leadership of the club.

And the Argentina ace believes he would have won any court case had he taken legal action against the club.

“I spent the whole year telling Bartomeu that I wanted to leave Barcelona. But the president always said ‘No’,” he said.

“The burofax was a way to make it official. I thought I had completed a cycle. I needed a change. I wanted to go, Barca cycle was over.

“Leaving for free last summer? I knew that if we went to court, we would have won. Not just one lawyer told me that, many did. But I didn’t want to leave Barca in that way…”
