Kalvin Phillips warned he would be ‘another squad player’ at Man City, with Pep Guardiola’s side poised to test Leeds United’s resolve with transfer bid June 15, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Kalvin Phillips has been warned over a potential move to Man City, with the England man told he’d be merely ‘another squad player’ if he joined the Premier League champions.

The Leeds United star has been a key player at Elland Road for the past five seasons, with a central role in helping the Whites club win promotion from the Championship and cement their status as a Premier League club once again.

Since then, the 26-year-old academy product has gone on to make 234 appearances for the Yorkshire club, as well as winning 23 caps for England after establishing himself as one of the best central midfielders in the country.

Despite suffering an injury-hit campaign this term, Phillips has showed the sort of quality that had led to Pep Guardiola’s side expressing an interest.

However, former Leeds and Man City defender Danny Mills has advised the midfielder not to make the switch.

Mills is confident Phillips has what it takes to play for a club like City in the future, but says he is not ready yet and would likely spend a lot of time on the bench if he moved to the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Speaking to White and Jordan on talkSPORT, he said: “I think if he goes to Manchester City he becomes another squad player.

“He’ll probably play 20 games or so? He’s not Rodri’s standard yet, Rodri’s different class.

“I remember watching Rodri when he first came in to the football club and thinking ‘wow’.”

Asked if Phillips can step up to that level, Mills said: “He can do.

“Undoubtedly we’ve seen him put in some fantastic performances, but we’ve seen it with Jack Grealish, going to Man City is another level.

“I remember when Rio Ferdinand left Leeds and went to Manchester United, we were doing well at the time at Leeds, but he went to United and he thought: ‘this is next level stuff’.

“Training was next level, there’s no messing about, there’s no 90 per cent performances in training, you have to be at it 100 per cent every single day, and that’s the difference.

“You’ll get away with things at teams slightly lower down the league table.

“It could be good for Phillips, but you’ve got to step up. If you don’t step up you’ll get found out very, very quickly.

“I’m not saying Kalvin Phillips will get found out because he’s a very good player, but going to Manchester City with the intensity and the expectation of having to win every single week is next level.”
