Jude Bellingham can be ‘Liverpool’s Erling Haaland’ as Borussia Dortmund star eyes becoming first England teenager to score in three separate Champions League seasons and closes in on Theo Walcott’s Arsenal record September 6, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham’s stock continues to rise as he closes in on yet another Champions League record.

The England international has become one of the best young talents in football since arriving in the Bundesliga back in 2020.

Bellingham already holds the record as the youngest English player to ever start a Champions League knockout stage match.

And when the 19-year-old lines up for Dortmund in their opening Group G clash against Copenhagen this week, he will have added another.

Bellingham’s 16 appearances in the Champions League is the second most by any English teenager – just one shy of Theo Walcott.

Phil Foden remains the youngest Englishman to start a Champions League match at aged 17 years and 192 days when he played against Shakhtar Donetsk in December 2017.

But the Manchester City star only managed to rack up a further 11 outings before he finished his teenage years in May 2020.

In addition to overhauling the likes of Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jack Wilshere and Wayne Rooney, Bellingham is also close to a unique goalscoring record of his own.

The former Birmingham City youngster could become the first English player to score in three separate Champions League seasons as a teen.

Bellingham notched his first ever European goal in a 2-1 defeat to Man City in April 2021 when he was just 17 years old.

And despite Dortmund crashing out of the Champions League group stages last year, Bellingham still made his mark in a 2-1 win over Besiktas.

This season’s competition is the last opportunity for the midfielder to join an illustrious five to score in three successive campaigns as a teen.

Should Bellingham score another before his 20th birthday in June, he will follow in the footsteps of Obafemi Martins, Karim Benzema, Bojan, Kylian Mbappe and Ansu Fati.

Bellingham’s form is just one of the reasons he’s so widely sought-after, with Liverpool the keenest to sign him next summer.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is believed to be resolved to wait for the £115million-rated England star’s price tag to come down next year.

Man City had a similar wait for Bellingham’s former team-mate Erling Haaland, but his early season form has proven it was worth it.

Ray Parlour told talkSPORT: “If they can get Bellingham next year that will be like Haaland going to City, the wow factor because he’s going to be a top player.

“I know Thiago’s a very important player but they’ve still got options in midfield, [Harvey] Elliott, he could get a starting place, [Naby] Keita coming back, Fabinho’s going to be very important.

“[James] Milner is another option, he can come in and do a job for anybody, but it is a blow, Thiago.”
