Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland edge closer to transfers as Borussia Dortmund dumped out of Bundesliga title race despite full stadium for first time in two years April 3, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Borussia Dortmund’s supporters filled out a capacity 81,357 crowd for the first time in two years, only to see their side dumped out of the Bundesliga title race with a humbling 4-1 loss to RB Leipzig.

The Signal Iduna Park was in a rapturous mood pre-match as a relaxation of Germany’s COVID-19 rules allowed fans to return to Dortmund in full for the first time since the pandemic began.

It had been 763 days since the Westfalenstadion had packed out its ‘Yellow Wall’ stand, with fans singing a pre-match rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ with banners in tow.

However, by half-time the home crowd were as good as silenced with Konrad Laimer bagging a simple brace for the away side.

Leipzig added two more after the break either side of a Donyell Malen consolation goal, effectively ending BVB’s Bundesliga title chances.

The soon to be leaving Erling Haaland completed the full match managing just a single shot, which wound up well off target.

Jude Bellingham also played out the 90 minutes, but failed to have an impact as Dortmund’s title hopes collapsed.

Leaders Bayern Munich had earlier picked up a 4-1 win over Freiburg to move nine points clear at the top of the table, a likely unassailable lead with just six games left to play.

That win didn’t come without controversy though, with Bayern briefly playing with 12 players.

A mix up with an 86th minute second half substitution saw Kingsley Coman remain on the field during a double change in what was called a ‘bizarre situation’ by Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann.

Dortmund could have cut Bayern’s lead back down to six points had they beaten Leipzig, and are still set to welcome the Bavarian giants to Westphalia on April 23.

But with such a comprehensive loss for Dortmund and a simple win for Bayern, it looks like the Bundesliga crown will remain in Munich for the 10th consecutive year, sealing Haaland’s exit, and potentially edging Bellingham towards the exit door.
