Jannik Vestergaard ‘reminds me of Virgil van Dijk’, says Martin Keown January 8, 2021 – Posted in: Soccer
Southampton fans won’t thank Martin Keown for his glowing comments about defender Jannik Vestergaard.
The centre-back has been with the club since 2018 but his game has really taken off this season, with Saints boasting one of the meanest defences in the Premier League.
Although Vestergaard didn’t feature, Southampton’s defence stood firm against Liverpool’s star-studded attack to secure a famous 1-0 win in their Premier League clash at St Mary’s on Monday.
The south coast side are sixth in the top-flight and are only out of the Champions League places on goal difference.
Vestergaard has also added goals to his game, netting three this season, and Keown likened him to former Saint Virgil van Dijk – who is now one of the best defenders in the world.
Keown told talkSPORT: “It’s his passing. It reminds me of Van Dijk.
“I call it a stationary platform. When you don’t run with the ball you stop and when you look at those two, the way the ping balls, the way he threads things into midfield, the challenges, he’s a big man.”
The Saints faithful may not like hearing this as their views of Van Dijk will be mixed.
Van Dijk is one of a long line of Southampton players who left to join Liverpool, his game really improving after completing his Anfield move in January 2018.
Vestergaard’s contract at Southampton expires in June 2022 and with Liverpool light in that area due to long-term injuries to Van Dijk and Joe Gomez, it may make Southampton feel slightly uncomfortable with the transfer window open.
But Keown is confident of the Denmark international’s future at the club.
Keown added: “Of course Southampton are not going to let him go but it’s really a testament to the work that’s been done at Southampton, how much they’re catching the eye at the moment.
“They were quite brilliant in that victory over Liverpool you have to say.”
