Jadon Sancho will join Declan Rice in his first ever beer – if his MUM allows him June 10, 2021 – Posted in: Soccer
Jadon Sancho is relieved his injury issues are behind him before Euro 2020, but admitted he would have to ask his MUM if he can celebrate victory this summer with a beer.
The Borussia Dortmund winger picked up a muscle injury in March and missed the Champions League quarter-final clashes with former side Manchester City.
At the time, Erdin Terzic’s men had just six games remaining and were struggling to qualify for Europe’s elite competition – until Sancho returned.
The 21-year-old scored four goals, got two assists and two Man of the Match awards as BVB finished third in the Bundesliga and beat RB Leipzig 4-1 to win the German Cup.
His return to form and fitness will also have placed a rather large grin on Gareth Southgate’s face before the commencement of the European Championship.
With Croatia looming large on Sunday in England’s Group D opener at Wembley, Sancho insists he knew he had to put the work in in order to return to his best.
“To be fair, when I got injured I was disappointed because I was in such great form,” he told talkSPORT’s Faye Carruthers.
“But I knew that I had to come back even stronger and obviously, that’s what I’ve done in my recovery as well.
“So I was just focusing on myself and being in the gym and working on a few things that I needed to work on.
“I came back even stronger, getting us through. I think we were about sixth or seventh in the league and we needed to make Champions League qualification.
“So we had targets, especially to win the Pokal, I’m happy that I came back and lifted the team with some motivation and some goals and assists.”
Although the former Man City winger has been linked with a move to their rivals in Red at Old Trafford, the focus is solely on helping the Three Lions at Euro 2020.
Southgate’s young squad are extremely different to Terry Venables’ squad at Euro ’96, who gained notoriety for their escapades.
With Declan Rice admitting he has never even tasted a drop of lager – much to Alan Brazil’s disgust – Sancho had a confession to make of his own.
“I think I will join him,” Sancho told talkSPORT. “I’ve never had a beer!
“I’m not really a big drinker so I don’t know about that.
“I need to ask my mum if I am allowed!”
