Jadon Sancho is ‘crumbling’ in a Man United shirt leaving former Premier League winger ‘baffled’ as he ‘played the ball backwards every time’ against Leicester April 3, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer
Jadon Sancho’s display in Manchester United’s draw with Leicester left former Premier League winger Gabby Agbonlahor ‘baffled’ to see Sancho ‘crumbling’ at Old Trafford.
Sancho played the full match as United’s hopes of a top four finish were dented in the 1-1 draw which saw Fred cancel out Kelechi Iheanacho’s opener.
The England international had a chance to win the match late on, but failed with a shot in the dying stages during a game in which he struggled.
United boss Ralf Rangnick opted to start the match without a recognised striker, and Sancho saw plenty of the ball as one of his side’s most advanced players, but failed to do much with it.
talkSPORT host Agbonlahor was commenting on the disappointing result for United, and saw Sancho as a stand-out issue.
“The biggest problem for me today was watching Jadon Sancho,” the former Aston Villa star said.
“I’ve played in that position, I’ve seen players like Aaron Lennon, top wingers like Shaun Wright-Phillips play in that position, they get the ball they take players on.
“Sancho played the ball back every time he got it to the level that he ended up playing one back and putting Ihenacho in. He was that desperate to play it backwards, he was that scared to take people on.
“I don’t know what’s happened to his confidence but that was the biggest problem for me watching that game today.”
Sancho joined United last summer in a £73million deal from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund where he crafted a reputation as one of the world’s top young talents.
The 22-year-old recorded a whopping 38 goals and 45 assists in the league during four seasons in Germany, but has just three goals and three assists since signing for United.
The Camberwell-born winger was famed for his ability to drift past players, but against Leicester he attempted only two dribbles, and completed just one.
Agbonlahor explained: “You’ve got a winger that looks up, looks at his defender and thinks ‘nah, nah, I’m passing it backwards’ and that should not be happening for the career that he’s had so far at Dortmund and his confidence is shattered.
“Even if you lose it, it doesn’t matter, get the ball and take on the fullback, he was looking at the fullback and thinking ‘nah, I don’t fancy that, I’m going to pass it back, I’ve done my job’ he was actually hiding on the pitch and that can’t happen.
“A manager has got to come in and get the best out of such a big talent. When he was at Dortmund, I know it’s probably an easier league, but he was taking players on, getting the ball, running past people, showing speed, skill.
“Today he’s crumbling in a Manchester United shirt, and that’s the biggest thing watching that game today, I was baffled.”
