Harry Kane told to learn from Ellen White’s ‘blatant dive’ as Jason Cundy praises England Women for use of ‘dark arts’ after thumping Euro 2022 win July 12, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer
England Women’s 8-0 win over Norway will serve as an inspiration to all, not just those in women’s football.
But there’s one player in particular that’s been told he should take note of the Lionesses’ performance, and that’s England men’s captain Harry Kane.
Kane scored for his country in June, netting a 88th minute penalty in England’s UEFA Nation’s League game against Germany.
But there’s other elements of his game that Kane has been told he should work on that Lionesses striker Ellen White has in her locker – winning penalties.
Georgia Stanway opened the scoring in Brighton for England on Monday night, converting from the spot after Sarina Wiegman’s side were awarded a penalty after White went down in the box.
There have been clearer penalty decisions. However, White told talkSPORT after the game that she definitely felt contact, so went down.
“I felt contact, it went to VAR and they checked it! Penalty, what more can you say, really?” she said.
However, Sports Bar host Jason Cundy isn’t so sure it was a clear-cut penalty but heaped praise on White for hitting the deck.
“It was a blatant dive from Ellen White, I don’t know how we got away with it,” a chuffed Cundy said.
“If that was Harry Kane I’d be saying well done, getting England off to a good start, making the referee give a decision in your favour to get yourself off and running.
“It’s good to see the dark arts are alive and well in women’s football.
“I’ve been critical of England’s men team not doing it enough at tournament level, good to see the girls are doing it to get themselves off to a good start!
“And it’s good to see the women are capable of doing something similar.”
He continued: “When I say she went down and she dived, it’s not a criticism.
“It’s a compliment from me saying in those situations the first goal often is so important.
“That shows to me a smart, clever, centre-forward player and as I’ve said, if Harry Kane does that at the World Cup in November I’ll be here saying exactly the same thing.
“You’re looking to gain those little advantages that we know at the highest level can be so crucial.”
