Giovanni van Bronckhorst ‘could have been sacked at half-time’ as talkSPORT host criticises Rangers for ‘ridiculous’ display in Old Firm thrashing at Celtic September 3, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Rangers were embarrassed by Celtic in the Old Firm derby as the Hoops cruised to a 4-0 victory over their arch rivals.

And talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham believes the Gers were so woeful that manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst could have lost his job at half-time.

It wasn’t a pretty first half for Rangers

Celtic took the lead against their bitter rivals at Celtic Park just eight minutes in to the tie thanks to Liel Abada, with Jota doubling the advantage and Abada popping up to make it three by half-time.

Rangers looked shell-shocked as they went down the tunnel for the break.

But as Van Bronckhorst would have been trying to galvanise his side ahead of another half in front of a raucous Old Firm derby crowd, talkSPORT’s Durham stated the manager should be having a look at himself.

“Rangers are absolutely dreadful,” he said, “If they hadn’t qualified for the Champions League, I think there’s every chance Giovanni van Bronckhorst could be sacked at half-time, they’ve been that bad.”

The Gers have won just one clash between the Glasgow clubs in the last five outings, with them last winning in August 2021 after they won their first title in 10 years over there local foes.

But Durham said this Rangers team didn’t seem to even be treating the tie against their rivals as a derby, and stated it showed they had no chance in winning the league.

“It’s almost like it’s not a derby, it’s ridiculous. Celtic playing some good stuff, but it’s an absolute stroll for them this afternoon,” Durham said.

“Fair play to them, they are going to go on and win the league again.”

He added: “The title parade is not going to be happening this season. They’ve been truly, truly shocking.”

Celtic went on to score again in the second half, with Rangers unable to implement damage limitation, as David Turnbull netted in the 78th minute to make it 4-0 after a mix-up at the back.
