‘Gareth Bale has been a bad signing for Tottenham, he’s not what Jose Mourinho expected’ January 12, 2021 – Posted in: Soccer

Tottenham’s move to bring Gareth Bale back to the club this season is looking like ‘an increasingly strange’ deal, according to Jason Cundy.

The talkSPORT host and former Spurs defender says the Welshman has been a ‘bad’ signing and sees no future for him in north London.

Gareth Bale re-joined Tottenham in September on a season-long loan – but it hasn’t been a roaring success

Tottenham’s deal to bring Bale back on loan from Real Madrid last summer was met with huge excitement and expectation, with claims he would form a devastating front-three with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.

But that dream has not come true for Spurs fans, with the Welsh forward managing just three goals in 12 appearances so far this term.

Of those 12 games, he has started eight, but six of those have been in the Europa League and he has started just one Premier League match.

Many expected Bale to get another chance to impress in Tottenham’s FA Cup third round clash against non-league Marine, only for the forward to be left out of starting XI and later coming on to play the last 25 minutes of the 5-0 win.

Bale has looked a shadow of the player that blew the Premier League away during his initial spell with Tottenham

And Cundy believes that’s because Jose Mourinho has been disappointed with the ‘version’ of Bale he has got, following his sour spell under Zinedine Zidane in Spain.

Speaking on The Sports Bar, the talkSPORT host said: “It’s looking like an increasingly strange signing, isn’t it?

“I know the Spurs fans were excited about it and I was too, I was looking forward to seeing what Gareth Bale was going to turn up and what we were going to see from him.

“But we’ve not seen anything, have we? We haven’t seen anything of him.

“So far, you’d have to say it’s been a bad signing.

Darren Ambrose believes Gareth Bale needs to be given more game time to show his ability amidst reports Jose Mourinho has already decided not to extend Welshman’s loan deal

“He looks happy, but he’s not really got the game time. Not to start against Marine, I found that very odd.

“I wonder what the future holds for Gareth at Spurs, because he’s on a huge contract; from what we know they’re paying some of it and Real Madrid are paying a large part of it.

“But even so, I don’t think Spurs are getting value for money at the moment.

“I think Spurs fans will be largely disappointed that he hasn’t been given more of a chance.

“The question is, why hasn’t he?

“Does Jose look at him and think: ‘You’re not quite what I thought I was going to get’?”
