Gareth Bale deal with Los Angeles FC ‘strange’ with MLS season structure but Wales captain ‘gave up on club football a couple of years ago’ June 25, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Gareth Bale’s move to MLS side Los Angeles FC has raised a few eyebrows – including those of talkSPORT’s Scott Minto.

The winger has been a free agent since the beginning of June following the end of his contract with Real Madrid.

The Wales captain had been linked with a whole range of clubs following his exit from the Santiago Bernabeu.

He’d been strongly touted for a return to Tottenham Hotspur especially, as well as the possibility of signing for his hometown club Cardiff City after he had talks with manager Steve Morison this week.

But it looks to be Los Angeles FC that have managed to secure his services, with Bale’s agents confirming the deal is close to being finalised.

LAFC are currently top of the Western Conference and have already added Juventus legend Giorgio Chiellini.

But talkSPORT’s Minto believes that US football’s season structure is what makes Bale’s move odd, although he’s unsurprised the Welshman isn’t so phased about club football anymore.

“I think Gareth Bale gave up on club football a couple of years ago.” the former Chelsea player said on The Saturday Session.

“I think the fact that he was willing to go to China when he was still in his 20s I think pretty much says it all.

“It’s been all about his country. All about getting fit for major tournaments, getting his country through to the major tournaments and playing in them for a good few years now.”

He continued: “He signed for twelve months, which is a bit strange because it’s half way through the MLS season, but ultimately it’s all about getting it right for the World Cup.

“It’s interesting, I think the [regular] season finishes on October 6th, so he still has another six or so weeks to keep fit somewhere.

“Maybe he’ll go to Cardiff and train with them.”
