Fulham sign former Chelsea and Arsenal winger Willian following exit from Corinthians where he received death threats September 1, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Willian has sealed a return to the Premier League with Fulham.

The 34-year-old had his contract at Corinthians cancelled and he will now join up with Marco Silva’s squad who have made a solid start to the Premier League season with two wins and two draws.

The 34-year-old free agent has put pen to paper on a one-year deal at Craven Cottage a year after leaving London.

“I’m happy to be here, I’m happy to be back in the Premier League,” he said.

“Fulham is a special club, a club that wants to improve, that wants to fight for something bigger, so I’m here to help, and I cant wait to get started.”

Following a short stint at Arsenal, the winger returned to Brazil last year to sign for Corinthians but the player and his family fell victim to a series of death threats on social media, leading to a premature exit from the club.

After making the decision to leave Corinthians last month, Willian detailed the reasons behind his exit.

He told fans: “Saying goodbye to Corinthians today I want to thank the club for the opportunity to wear this shirt again and to the fans who largely supported me.

“Unfortunately due to the constant threats that my family and I suffered, I made the decision to terminate the contract, understanding that it would be better for me and the club.

“I wish the club all the best and may God bless everyone.”

Joining Chelsea in 2013, Willian won five trophies during his spell at Stamford Bridge, including two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a Europa League success.

He was a regular starter for Brazil and was part of the squad for the 2014 World Cup in his homeland.

Willian has not represented his country since 2019 but has clocked up 70 caps, scoring nine goals.
