Fenerbahce launch text campaign to help pay Mesut Ozil’s wages even though he’s taking huge pay cut from Arsenal salary January 24, 2021 – Posted in: Soccer
Fenerbahce have asked fans to help pay for Mesut Ozil’s wages by donating money to the club.
Ozil is said to have agreed a seven-figure payout with the Gunners to end his time at the north London club six months early.
He then flew straight to Turkey to complete his move to Fenerbahce and he is expected to pen his contract next week..
Ozil was earning around £18million-a-year in wages from Arsenal and will be taking a pay cut to join Fenerbahce.
But the club’s president Ali Koc has asked fans for financial support to fund his contract.
Koc said: “We have a request for our fans. Please continue to support us, we are also dependent on your financial support.
“On the day of the signature, I will ask you to break a record. With an SMS campaign.
“Maybe 300,000, 500,000 or maybe even a million text messages come together. This support will do us very good.”
Text messages in the ‘Mesutol campaign’ will cost just under £2 and will be sent to the number 1907, which was the year Fenerbahce was founded.
Ozil rejected a lucrative move to MLS side DC United after being offered a three-and-a-half-year deal by the Turkish side, who he supported as a boy.
As his move was confirmed, Ozil thanked the club and singled out Edu, but decided against mentioning Arteta.
“I’d like to thank the club for this amazing journey over the past seven-and-a-half years.
“The support I have felt from the team and fans during my time here has been truly incredible and something I will always be grateful for.
“Together we won trophies for the first time in years and created memories that will last a lifetime. The Arsenal fans will forever remain in my heart.
“I’d like to thank Edu Gaspar for helping bring about a professional and dignified solution in the past few days, and I wish everyone at the club the best in their attempt to continue to bring Arsenal back to the top, where we belong.”
A brief Fenerbahce statement said: “Our club is bringing Mesut Özil to Istanbul to continue the transfer processes.”
