Euro 2022 stars Chloe Kelly and Fran Kirby ruled out of England’s first fixtures since triumph but Chelsea star Lauren James can make history with brother Reece August 24, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Sarina Wiegman has named a much changed side for England’s first games since their Euro 2022 triumph.

The Lionesses will be taking Austria and Luxembourg as they look to secure their spot at the 2023 World Cup.

They will have to do so without stars of their home victory though, with two key players from the Wembley final win over Germany, Chloe Kelly and Fran Kirby, out through injury.

“Chloe, it’s just a small thing but it’s too early to bring her in and let her play,” Wiegman said.

“Against Real Madrid she had to go out, I think something with her leg. It’s not too bad. I think it won’t take too long.

“Fran has a foot injury, it takes a little more time. I think she’ll be alright, but she hasn’t had that much training at all, so she just needs a little more time, this camp just comes too early.”

Wiegman will also be without record scorer Ellen White who retired from football since becoming a European champion, as has Jill Scott, England women’s second most capped player.

“It’s hard to describe in words how much impact they had,” the two-time Euro-winning coach said.

“Of course I’ve only worked with them for a year, so I’m a little disappointed I cannot work longer with them, but I totally understand their decision and respect that.

“Their impact on the game, on everything in women’s football, in England but I also think further than England, is just incredible.

I think we’re all so proud of them and thankful for what they’ve brought, and I just hope they stick with the game in some kind of other role.

“We will absolutely miss those two, but I think that will stabilise over the next camps and it also gives an opportunity to other players to step up and become more a leader in the team – but I do think we already have some, that’s what we showed during the summer too.”

Helping fill the void will be two fresh faces, and one that could well make history.

Possibly earning a first cap will be Lauren James, the sister of Chelsea and England right back Reece James, and an appearance would make the James’s the first siblings to represent both of England’s men and women’s teams.

Ebony Salmon, who has just a single cap, also returns to the fold, as does Arsenal’s Jordan Nobbs who was ruled out of the Euros with a knee injury.

England sit top of Group D in qualifying with a maximum 24 points from their eight games and have at least secured a play-off spot for the tournament.

All they need is a point away at Austria on September 3 to secure automatic qualification for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand next summer.
