England share goalless draw with Italy as Raheem Sterling misses key chance in underwhelming Nations League affair June 11, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer
England drew 0-0 with Italy in an underwhelming match at Molineux on Saturday.
Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions remain winless in their current Nations League campaign after three games and sit bottom of their Group having been beaten 1-0 by Hungary and drawn 1-1 with Germany in the past week.
Despite the lack of fans inside Molineux as a punishment for disorder at the Euro 2020 final, the game did get off to a lively start.
Davide Frattesi should have put Italy ahead, but fired a shot wide of Ramsdale’s far post before Tammy Abraham passed up a fine chance at the other end.
Mason Mount then cracked a strike off the crossbar at the end of a positive England move, entertaining the youthful crowd permitted to attend in the early exchanges.
“Fantastic opportunity,” Stuart Pearce said on talkSPORT commentary, “Mount should’ve done better to be quite honest with you.”
Aaron Ramsdale was on hand to make a smart stop as Italy once again threatened at the midway stage of a half that had started to peter out.
Manuel Locatelli’s diagonal pass was hammered across goal by Giovanni Di Lorenzo with Sandro Tonali arriving and firing in a shot which Ramsdale did well to keep out.
“I’ve gotta give the goalkeeper credit for getting a block on that,” Pearce reacted, “It was all or nothing to be honest.”
The sides would go in level at the interval, Ramsdale again doing well to tip a Matteo Pessina shot over the bar in the closing stages of a goalless first 45.
The second half had far fewer chances.
Sterling missing the best opportunity to score a winner as Southgate threw on Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Jarrod Bowen in a forlorn search for three points.
Ultimately there would be no breakthrough, leaving England winless in their last three games.
