England have overcome their semi-final curse and can now make history as Sarina Wiegman’s side are told to ‘bring it home’ after stunning thrashing of Sweden in Women’s Euro 2022 July 26, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer
Whisper it quietly, but football may be coming home.
The 28,624 in attendance weren’t exactly whispering this as England inflicted a shellacking on the world’s second best ranked side, beating Sweden 4-0 at a buoyant Bramall Lane.
The incredible result ends England’s run of semi-final defeats, which is where they fell in their last three major tournaments.
They’re now just one win from lifting their first major trophy and talkSPORT’s Lianne Sanderson, who’s time and again batted off questions from our presenters on whether it’s the Lionesses’ tournament to lose gave her biggest indication that the time is now for our girls.
When asked how confident she was over England winning the final, Sanderson said on commentary for talkSPORT: “It feels different, this tournament.
“The way they’ve overcome the semi-final curse in the way that they have… I have a feeling that it’s now.
“I said Spain were going to win this tournament before it started but these girls have played their way into being the favourites and they’ve overcome every single hurdle.
“It will take a really good team to beat this England team… but Germany or France are top, top teams.
“It’s going to be a difficult game. I think psychologically the players would rather play France but this England team can beat anyone.”
As mentioned, a date with either France or Germany awaits Sarina Wiegman’s swashbuckling side which will no doubt see a new level of interest with the entire nation tipped to be at a standstill on Sunday.
talkSPORT’s Jason Cundy said: “I’ve read this Sunday will be the second highest viewed event this calendar year behind the Jubilee. What’s going to happen on Sunday might eclipse that.
“The build-up to Sunday, what can you say? It’s remarkable stuff.
“This is elite football that’s captured the imagination, we’ve never done this before – a phone-in on women’s football at this level.
“This is a chance for these women to be history makers. I can only imagine how their families and close friends are feeling right now… they’re going to be household names these girls.
“Now, bring it home!”
