Edouard Mendy ‘got away with murder’ against West Ham as supporter says Chelsea VAR call was ‘one of the worst decisions he’s seen in his life’ September 3, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Chelsea goalkeeper Édouard Mendy has been told he ‘got away with murder’ after VAR ruled out West Ham’s last minute equaliser.

It was a day of controversy across the Premier League, from Virgil van Dijk’s unpunished challenge, Newcastle’s disallowed goal versus Crystal Palace and West Ham’s equaliser being chalked off.

But for talkSPORT’s Game Day phone-in host Gabby Agbonlahor, it was the Hammers’ ruled out goal against Chelsea that stood out as the worst decision of the day.

West Ham’s Maxwell Cornet found the net shortly after going 2-1 down in the dying minutes of their clash against Chelsea.

But after the away end exploded in raptures and the Irons celebrated, the goal was soon called to be reviewed by VAR after Mendy went down injured after a one on one with Jarrod Bowen in the lead up to the goal.

When asked by co-host Jamie O’Hara what moment of Saturday’s games raised his eyebrows the most, the former Aston Villa striker didn’t struggle to choose.

And he even stated the officials got the decision the wrong way round, echoing manager David Moyes’ thoughts that the keeper ‘conned’ the referee to get the goal overturned.

“The biggest thing for me today that stood out was Mendy getting away with murder for that goal,” he said.

“Bowen has no where to go. It’s a foul from Mendy on Bowen for me, it was a goal for West Ham, they were robbed.

“Chelsea, for me, were very lucky to win today.”

West Ham fans were left reeling after the match.

And for one Hammers supporter, the official’s decision has left him questioning his dedication to football.

“Why are we paying money to go watch football anymore?” West Ham fan Singh asked the Game Day hosts.

“It’s a joke. That’s one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen in my life, honestly it’s an absolute joke.

“You can’t avoid that type of contact [between Bowen and Mendy]. It happens in the game, every time a keeper comes out for the ball, he collides with a striker.

“How is that a foul?”
