Dean Henderson backed to replace David de Gea as Man Utd No.1 despite huge howler against Sheffield United December 18, 2020 – Posted in: Soccer
Dean Henderson has been backed to permanently oust David de Gea and become Manchester United’s new number one goalkeeper.
That’s despite his huge howler against Sheffield United on Thursday night, which saw the young Englishman allow his former club to score.
The Blades opened the scoring at Bramall Lane after Henderson’s attempted clearance was intercepted and David McGoldrick pounced to find the back of the net.
United roared back to beat the Blades 3-2, with Henderson – who spent two seasons on loan at Sheffield United – making amends with a stretching save at the death to ensure the Red Devils took home all three points.
And despite his early error against Sheffield United, the 23-year-old has been backed to keep the gloves full-time for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
Speaking on Friday’s talkSPORT Breakfast, The Sun’s Manchester correspondent Neil Custis said: “I think the time is coming when the gloves have to be handed to him.
“De Gea seems to be a goalkeeper who is nailed to his line the whole time, and I think that makes his defence a bit nervous because they’re not sure where he is.
“Well, they do know where he is, he’s nailed to his line… but he should come off it more.
“I think the time has come for there to be a change, but they’re still two very good goalkeepers.”
United’s victory saw Solskjaer’s side make history, as the first Premier League team ever to win six consecutive away games after conceding first.
The Red Devils are even being tipped as surprise title contenders now, after the victory lifted them to sixth place and just five points behind leaders Liverpool.
And while some might scoff at that suggestion, Custis says they should be taken seriously.
“They’re getting into their stride now, they’re building up a bit of steam,” he added.
“This is a very, very good team. They can look mediocre at times, but they can look very good.
“They are not going to get the space they got last night in every game, but this is a very good group of players that should have more points than they’ve currently got.
“They’re now starting to show what they can do.”
