David Moyes ends Goodison Park hoodoo as Tomas Soucek nets late winner for West Ham at Everton January 2, 2021 – Posted in: Soccer

Tomas Soucek scored a late winner to secure a 1-0 victory for West Ham at Everton on New Year’s Day.

It is the first time David Moyes has recorded a victory as an opposition manager at Goodison Park since leaving the Toffees for Manchester United in 2013.

Before tonight’s match, Moyes had lost all four of his visits to Everton in all competitions by an aggregate score of 1-12, including a 4-1 Carabao Cup loss this season.

Soucek poked home the winner in the 86th minute as Everton missed the chance to climb to second in the Premier League table.

Meanwhile, West Ham won for the first time in five games to move into the top 10.

Despite the late drama, the first Premier League game of 2021 was one to forget with limited chances.

Aaron Cresswell threatened when his cross-come-shot drifted wide of the post, before Bernard tested stand-in West Ham goalkeeper Darren Randolph, who was a late replacement for the injured Lukasz Fabianski, in a dull first-half.

Unfortunately, the second-half barely offered any more goal threat as West Ham’s back four did well to contain Dominic Calvert-Lewin, whose barren run stretched to six games.

Moyes introduced Michail Antonio, Andriy Yarmolenko and Manuel Lanzini, while Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti sent on the returning James Rodriguez to attempt to break the deadlock.

And when the game looked to be petering out into a draw, Soucek scored his sixth goal of the season in fortuitous circumstances.

The midfielder was played in by Yarmolenko and had his shot saved by Jordan Pickford, but the ball trickled out to Cresswell as his shot was deflected into the path of the goalscorer who made no mistake from close-range.
