Cristiano Ronaldo ‘vetoed’ appointment of Antonio Conte as Manchester United finally prepare to appoint permanent new boss with Erik Ten Hag deal ‘verbally agreed’ April 13, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly vetoed Manchester United’s approach for Antonio Conte as the club’s new manager last year, but wasn’t consulted this time as they close in on their new boss.

The Red Devils are said to be on the cusp of appointing Erik ten Hag as the club’s new permanent head coach, to succeed current interim Ralf Rangnick.

United carried out an extensive search for a permanent solution following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with Conte among the names being considered during the Autumn months.

However, reports from the Manchester Evening News have suggested that part of the reason the club didn’t move for the Italian was on Ronaldo’s recommendation.

Now Tottenham boss, Conte was interested in the job but, after Ronaldo made his reservations known to the United hierarchy, the decision was made to pursue a different avenue.

The Portugal star is among the most influential players at Old Trafford and it’s claimed that his agent Jorge Mendes sought assurances that Solskjaer would be sacked, while also recommending Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui for the role.

Zinedine Zidane was also linked with the move, however reports have suggested that these ‘baseless reports’ were merely a way to appease a concerned Ronaldo.

While it’s not clear just how much influence Ronaldo has on matters at Old Trafford, it seems that a permanent appointment is not far away.

While ten Hag is in line to take the job this summer, talkSPORT has been told the Ajax coach should ‘run a mile’ after seeing United’s recent performance against Everton.

After watching United’s 1-0 defeat to the relegation battlers, reporter and Red Devils fan Alex Crook said: “Ten Hag looks to be the chosen one, I think United are just delaying the appointment until Ajax have settled their league campaign and they are still in the Dutch Cup as well, but I think Ten Hag’s move will happen.

“If I was Ten Hag watching that yesterday, I would run a mile.

“He will be walking in to a toxic dressing room. We know players will move on, but the fact Paul Pogba is allowed to go on a long farewell tour is baffling, for me.

“He should be nowhere near the team. He has no commitment to Manchester United, and showed little since his return.

“Suddenly, all of a sudden, Juan Mata – who has not played all season – seems to be the answer to the problems. I can’t get my head around that.

“Nemanja Matic is also still rumbling around in midfield and Aaron Wan-Bissaka seems to be getting worse by the game. There are so many players that need moving on.”
