Cristiano Ronaldo to Marseille has been ‘studied’ by the Ligue 1 club as Manchester United star tipped to have similar impact Zlatan Ibrahimovic had at Paris Saint-Germain August 25, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

It looked like Cristiano Ronaldo’s chances of Champions League football this season were over, but not if reports in France are to be believed.

After a proposed move to Borussia Dortmund was ruled out, the Manchester United forward was stuck at Old Trafford. However, a last roll of the dice in Ligue 1 could well be on.

But before you start dreaming up a partnership with fellow all-time great Lionel Messi at Paris Saint-Germain, Ronaldo wouldn’t even be signing for the runaway champions.

Instead, a move to Marseille has been mooted with former Marseille player Jean-Charles De Bono revealing last season’s Ligue 1 runners-up have already conducted a study into the financial feasibility of a transfer.

“A study is being carried out to find out what Ronaldo could bring to the club financially,” he said. “This was also done by PSG at Messi.

“Olympique decided to study the impact Ronaldo is having on sponsors around the world to bring them to Marseille.”

Should any deal come to fruition, Ronaldo could form an impressive front line in the south of France with former Man United and Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez already joining this summer.

West Ham cult hero Dimitri Payet also plays for Marseille, as do former Arsenal duo Matteo Guendouzi and Sead Kolasinac as well as Gunners loanee Nuno Tavares.

Multiple reports have claimed that Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes already held talks with Bayern Munich and Chelsea this summer in order to return his star client to the top club competition of European football.

Neither of those landing spots paid off though, with Marseille one of the few remaining options who have qualified for this season’s Champions League.

Former Arsenal and Marseille star Samir Nasri suggested: “I have a solution for him.

“He can terminate his contract, they give him half his year and in Marseille, they make an effort, they give him something and he comes to play in the Champions League. A Cristiano Ronaldo-Alexis Sanchez attack looks good.”

Club legend Mamadou Niang agreed, saying Ronaldo’s impact could be as big as Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s was at PSG.

“Ibra’s impact when he arrived at PSG reinvigorated the fans. Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival in Marseille would do the city good for the fans,” he said.

“He’s an old player, but today he can perform, he can bring more on the pitch and in the locker room. When you have the opportunity to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, I think [Pablo] Longoria and [Franck] McCourt should jump at the chance and at least give it a try.”
