Cristiano Ronaldo going and Erik ten Hag signing Ajax alumni in busy transfer window before Premier League opener July 2, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

It’s been over a month since the transfer window opened and Manchester United still haven’t signed any players.

On top of that, their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly told the club he wants to leave, which could mean they are in for a very busy few months before the season starts.

Not only do they need to sign players to help them improve on a disappointing sixth-place finish last season, but they may also have to replace last campaign’s top scorer.

Ronaldo is said to want to play in the Champions League for the remainder of his career, which the Red Devils won’t be doing next season.

That may also mean they struggle to attract some of the big-name targets they would have liked to have brought in this summer.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially when you look at how Man United’s big-money transfers have got on in recent years.

Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez could both join the club from the Eredivise – just like new boss Erik ten Hag, who had the latter at Ajax.

United are said to have hijacked Lyon’s move for Feyenoord left-back Malacia, but the player is yet to decide whether to join the Red Devils.

As for Martinez, who won back-to-back Dutch titles with Ten Hag, talkSPORT understands the club has made an opening offer of £39million for the Ajax man, who can play in defence or midfield.

Arsenal are also believed to be interested in the 23-year-old, but a reunion with his former manager is believed to be the preference.

Another ex-Ajax man looks close to a move to Manchester, with the club agreeing an initial £56million fee for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The player is yet to agree on personal terms with United and it is understood the 25-year-old remains keen on playing Champions League football next season.

Current and former Ajax players seem to be the club’s strategy in the transfer market, with Christian Eriksen also starting his career in the Dutch capital.

United are said to be in talks with Eriksen’s representatives and have made a formal offer to the former Tottenham and Inter Milan midfielder.

That’s not forgetting Donny van de Beek who was signed by the Red Devils when Ten Hag was Ajax boss.

The club already have some good attacking options, with Jadon Sancho possessing the ability to become one of the best in the division, as well as Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.

The latter had a disappointing campaign last time out but looks keen to impress his new boss.

The England international travelled to the US during the off-season to undergo a ‘working holiday’ ahead of the Premier League side’s pre-season.

He may get an opportunity to play as a centre-forward if Ronaldo leaves, and would be likely to get chances with the plethora of creativity that could surround him.

But Man United still have a lot to do in the transfer market and, with many of their targets also wanted by other clubs, it will be far from simple to get things wrapped up.

With just 36 days left until their first game of the season against Brighton, the club have some serious work to do.
