‘Cristiano Ronaldo can do what he wants’ July 24, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo’s future still remains unclear ahead of the new season.

But despite the wishes of Manchester United fans to hold onto their star, Ronaldo has been told both he and the likes of Lionel Messi ‘don’t owe anyone anything’.

Ronaldo was recently pictured wearing the new Man United shirt… but will he be donning it on the pitch?

Ronaldo’s contract at Old Trafford doesn’t expire until next summer.

However, following a below par season for the Red Devils which saw dressing room discontent and a 6th place finish, the star could be heading for the exit and has informed the club he wants to leave.

The Portuguese forward didn’t join his team for pre-season and has been linked with a number of clubs, with Atletico Madrid stealing headlines this week for wanting to offload Antoinne Griezmann for him.

Where Ronaldo will be playing next season has been the topic of conversation for months, and has inevitably been debated by numerous talkSPORT pundits – including Dean Saunders.

This Sunday, the ex-Liverpool star explained that he and talkSPORT’s transfer expert and resident Man United fan were discussing whether Ronaldo owes the Red Devils anything when debating his next move.

But despite most United supporters belief that the Portuguese star won’t want to damage his hero status at the club, Saunders stated he believed Ronaldo doesn’t need to worry about that.

Speaking on Sunday’s talkSPORT Weekend Breakfast, the former striker explained: “He [Crook] said ‘Do you think Ronaldo owes Man United because we started his career off?’

“And I said no, he’s done so much in the game that he owes nobody nothing.

“Neither does Messi.”

Whilst Ronaldo could be taking a risk of leaving the club that worships him, Messi’s loyalty to clubs has been questioned before, with him leaving his boyhood club Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain last season.

Saunders believes Messi and Ronaldo have the right to do as they please

After leaving Barcelona for PSG, Messi scored just 11 goals in all competitions for the French champions last season, but has since been backed by club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi to get better.

But due to his services to football and the entertainment he’s provided to the sport, Saunders believes he can do as he pleases when it comes to making decisions in his career.

And he thinks the same applies to Ronaldo.

“I don’t think he [Ronaldo] owes anybody any loyalty,” Saunders continued.

“He’s just given us so much pleasure over the years and he’s achieved so much in his career, he doesn’t he can do whatever he wants.”

With just two weeks to go until the start of the Premier League, it’s unclear if Ronaldo will be pulling on a United shirt ever again.

And given he’s indicated he wants to play Champions League football still as he enters the twilight years of his career, and considering United aren’t in the competition, it wouldn’t be too shocking if he did leave.
