Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku pursuit questioned by Gianfranco Zola as Blues legend fears Timo Werner could be frozen out with transfer August 6, 2021 – Posted in: Soccer

Gianfranco Zola fears for Timo Werner’s role at Chelsea if they sign Romelu Lukaku.

It was reported last week the Belgian striker had politely declined a Stamford Bridge return as he was very happy with life at Italian champions Inter Milan.

However, according to The Telegraph, the 28-year-old, who hit 30 goals in 44 appearances for Inter last term, has told the club to accept a suitable bid and grant his wish to join the Blues.

Inter want the European champions to stump up at least £100million for their star striker, as they aim to balance their books this summer and ease their financial troubles.

Lukaku is said to feel that he has unfinished business at Stamford Bridge and would be interested in a return to London, if the Blues can stump up the cash.

Zola, however, worries a huge signing like Lukaku will hinder Werner’s role in the side, despite his difficult first season in the Premier League.

Werner played a huge role in Chelsea’s remarkable Champions League triumph, but was criticised for missing a glut of key chances and getting caught offside more often than not.

He ended the season as the club’s top striker, but was still level on 12 goals with Tammy Abraham, who played half the number of games.

“Chelsea had an extraordinary season last year, but the focus was always on the fact that they lacked a goalscorer,” Chelsea legend Zola told Tuttomercatoweb.

Charlie Austin doesn’t think Timo Werner is an ‘out and out goalscorer’ and would be better suited playing alongside someone like Romelu Lukaku at Chelsea

“They often created chances, and in some games, they were quite penalised. Lukaku comes in to fill that gap, but I liked Chelsea the way they were.

“Werner did a dirty job for everyone else, and the reason they won the Champions League is because he put others in a position to do well.

“I’m curious to see Lukaku, but I liked Chelsea the way they were.”
