Bristol Rovers manager Joey Barton thanks Marseille ultras for welcoming him in away end at Tottenham for Champions League opener where he was serenaded in the pub and gave the finger in loss to Spurs September 8, 2022 – Posted in: Soccer

Joey Barton was spotted sitting with Marseille’s fans as his former side played Tottenham in the Champions League.

Bristol Rovers manager Barton made the trip to White Hart Lane for their European opener, but chose not to sit in a corporate box, instead heading to the away end with his son.

The former midfielder made a surprise move to France for the 2012/13 season, joining Marseille on loan from Queens Park Rangers, making 33 appearances in all competitions.

The Englishman quickly made a name for himself when he mocked Paris Saint-Germain’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic for having a big nose, and later embarrassed himself where many Brits abroad do.

Barton conducted an interview in English with a French accent, but it didn’t affect his relationship with Marseille fans, who seemed more than happy to have him in their away end.

He was initially welcomed into a pub near the ground and then inside, chants of ‘Barton!’ went around, with the Rovers boss patting his heart in thanks, before joining in with a rendition of ‘Marseille Allez’.

As well as singing, the League One boss was also spotted making an obscene gesture.

“Thank you to the supporters of the Olympic Marseille,” he wrote on Instagram. “The best. You made my son and I feel welcome. Always in my heart Go OM.”

After his time in Ligue 1, Barton returned to QPR in 2013, helping the London side return to the Premier League before departing for Burnley two years later.

Since retiring from playing in 2017, Barton moved to the dugout, first with Fleetwood, before joining Rovers in 2021 who he led to promotion to League One this season.

On Wednesday night, Barton’s former side gave a good account of themselves but Tottenham’s class eventually showed as Richarlison’s double secured a 2-0 win for them.

The end of the match, though, was marred by ugly scenes in the stands as groups of Spurs and Marseille fans were seen clashing.
