Aston Villa boss Dean Smith says Stockley Park have their SLIPPERS on and takes a pop at ‘card happy’ Mike Dean December 13, 2020 – Posted in: Soccer

Dean Smith toasted another away victory but was far from happy with referee Mike Dean and the VAR officials at Stockley Park.

Villa claimed their fourth league win on the road this season as they beat Midlands rivals Wolves 1-0 on Saturday.

Anwar El Ghazi converted a stoppage-time penalty after John McGinn was felled in the box by Nelson Semedo.

The visitors could have got a penalty in the first half with the ball touching Romain Saiss’s arm inside his own box.

VAR had a look at the incident again and while they were right not to penalise the Wolves star, the way they came to that conclusion was controversial.

And Smith suggested the officials in Stockley Park’s concentration levels are not as high as they should be, claiming they make their decisions while wearing their slippers!

He told talkSPORT: “I’ve been pleased with the last couple of performances, we’ve been beaten in games where we shouldn’t have with our performances and dodgy VAR decisions.

“I wouldn’t mind a job at Stockley Park myself, stick my slippers on and watch a game of football and not really get on too much.”

While the Villa boss complained about VAR’s lack of involvement, he suggested referee Dean was a little too eager to get involved throughout the Molineux clash.

The man in the middle ‘achieved’ a personal milestone as his booking of Matty Cash in the 29th minute was Dean’s 3,000th Premier League yellow card.

Cash was one of NINE players to be cautioned, while Joao Moutinho and Douglas Luiz were sent off in the Midlands derby, causing Smith to accuse the referee of being too ‘card happy’.

He added: “Unfortunately, we’ve lost a couple of games because of that but today I liked what I saw, there was real passion from all the players out there, very competitive in the nature of the game.

“I didn’t think there should have been nearly as many yellow cards as there was. And two reds, it wasn’t that type of game. Mike got a little card happy unfortunately.”
